We keep this simple. We collect only what it takes to find your map, sell it to you, and get it to you.
What we collect, and when
- When you buy. Stripe's checkout asks for your email and your payment details, and for prints your shipping address. Stripe passes us your email, what you bought and, for prints, where to ship it. We never see your card number.
- When you send a request slip. The place you name, your email, and any note you add. The form is handled by Netlify, our hosting provider, and lands with us.
- When you collect your files. Opening the thank-you page makes our order-check service look up your Stripe checkout so it can build your download links. That service runs on Cloudflare.
- When you search on a map page. The search box sends your search words straight from your browser to the public archive's own search (the Library of Congress or the USGS), so it can show you matching sheets. We do not keep those searches.
- Plain server logs. Like any site, our host keeps standard request logs (IP address, page requested, time) to keep the site running.
Who handles it with us
- Stripe for payment and receipts.
- Our print partner, for prints only: your name, shipping address and what to print, so they can make it and ship it.
- Netlify for hosting and the request forms.
- Cloudflare for the order-check service that builds your download links.
- Google Fonts: the site loads its typefaces from Google, so your browser makes a request to Google when a page loads.
- Google Analytics, unless you have said no — see the next section.
- Netlify's image service resizes the map pictures on our pages so they load quickly; the pictures are served from our own domain.
Analytics, and how to say no
We use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-S8MT170HX1) to count visits and to see which pages, searches and maps get looked at, so we can make the shop easier to use. It sets Google's analytics cookies (named _ga and _ga_…) in your browser and sends page views and a few actions — a search typed into one of our finders, a click through to Etsy, the start of a checkout, and a completed order by its reference number — to Google, which processes that data under Google's own privacy policy. We turn on IP anonymisation and we do not use any of Google's advertising features. The events never carry your name, email or address.
You can say no, and your no is kept in your browser (a small saved setting, not a cookie): press "No analytics" on the notice that appears the first time you visit, use the switch below, or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser. When the answer is no, the Google script is never loaded and no analytics cookie is set.
Analytics status
Each of them handles data under their own privacy terms.
What we do not do
- No advertising tags, no ad cookies, no remarketing, no selling of your information. The one measurement tool we run is described in its own section above.
- We do not sell or rent your information to anyone.
- We use your email only for your order or your request. No newsletter unless you ask for one.
How long we keep it
Order records stay as long as bookkeeping and tax rules need them. Request slips stay until we have answered and a while after, in case you come back for the map.
Your choices
To ask what we hold about you, or to have it removed, reply to any email we have sent you, or use the request slip on any map page and say so. We read every message.
This page is written in plain words by the shop and describes what the site does today. An attorney review is pending. The plain meaning stands until then.
